Our School
About Us
At Venerable John Merlini Catholic School, our mission is to help every student reach their full potential in a Christ-centered, dynamic learning environment. We celebrate the unique gifts and talents of each member of our community.
Learning Environment
We are committed to creating a positive, safe, and welcoming space where students grow spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically.
Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and develop self-discipline. When disciplinary action is necessary, we prioritize clear communication with students and parents, aiming to guide students toward positive change through counselling and dialogue.
We promote conflict resolution through discussion and negotiation, helping students build essential interpersonal skills.
Celebrations and Activities
Our school community engages in various activities and celebrations that foster a love of learning, self-confidence, and personal growth. We emphasize that sustained effort leads to success, self-esteem, and lifelong enjoyment.
School History
Venerable John Merlini Catholic School was established in September 1981, sharing a leased facility with Whitfield Public School under the North York Board of Education. The school community originally included families from the St. Gaspar and St. Roch Catholic School communities, located south of Steeles Avenue and west of Islington Avenue.
In 2002, St. Gaspar Catholic School merged with Venerable John Merlini, forming a unified school community.
Our school is part of St. Roch’s Parish. Members of the Society of the Precious Blood play a vital role in our religious education program. They support us in teaching Gospel values and lead liturgical celebrations for students, staff, and parents.
Our Namesake
Venerable John Merlini was born on August 28, 1795, in Spoleto, Italy. He travelled extensively across Italy, preaching the reconciling power of Christ’s blood and leading popular missions. He was instrumental in developing the Missionary Society of the Precious Blood both in Italy and abroad.
Known for his sanctity, he passed away in Rome on January 12, 1873. On June 22, 1972, Pope Paul VI recognized his heroic virtue and issued a decree to that effect.
