The latest EQAO results demonstrate that Toronto Catholic students continue to make progress in reading and writing over last year, with math achievement rising steadily over the past four years. These results demonstrate the dedication of students, the commitment of teachers and leaders, the partnership of parents/guardians, and the Board’s emphasis on early intervention as a key driver in strengthening the foundational skills that set students up for success.
EQAO assessments provide a snapshot in time of how students are progressing in key areas of learning. The provincial standard is Level 3 or above, which corresponds to achieving 70% or higher, or earning a B or above in classroom terms.
Math achievement is seeing the most significant growth, with improvements across all three grades over last year. Even larger increases, between 8 and 15 points over the last four years, are being seen across Toronto Catholic’s 55 priority math schools. Thanks to targeted investments from the province, these schools are benefiting from dedicated math facilitators who are helping students close learning gaps, make meaningful gains, and strengthen overall achievement.
Key areas of progress in math include:
Grade 3 Math (58% → 61%, +3%): Early numeracy gains are setting a solid foundation for future success.
Grade 6 Math (48% → 49%, +1%): Sustained growth reflects strong foundational skills and increased confidence in numeracy.
Grade 9 Math (55% → 60%, +5%): Measurable growth shows students are building stronger math skills alongside targeted investments that support their transition to high school.
The TCDSB’s Mathematics Achievement Action Plan is strengthening math learning by ensuring the new provincial curriculum is taught effectively, bolstering teacher capacity through ongoing professional learning, and delivering tailored, inclusive initiatives so every student has the opportunity to improve and succeed.
Here’s how this comes to life in our schools and classrooms:
Digital math tools like Knowledgehook, Edwin, and MathUP are advancing success by helping teachers identify student needs and provide targeted support through curriculum embedded, through interactive, game-like assessments.
School-led math hubs are championed locally and are driving increased student participation, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
Offering ongoing job-embedded professional development opportunities, such as co-learning and co-teaching and modelling to support math educators in using high impact instructional practices effectively.
Promoting cross-disciplinary, inquiry-based learning to spark curiosity and a life-long passion for learning through experiential learning opportunities.
Piloting innovative programs such as Indigenous Beading, Coding Across the Strands, Data Dunkers, and integrating modern digital tools, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to create more engaging and dynamic classrooms that prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow.
Toronto Catholic remains committed to strengthening this work by continuing to invest in student-focused programming, professional learning for staff, and strategies that ensure every student has the tools and support they need to succeed in school and beyond.
