James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School’s High Performance Athletics (HPA) students have reached an exciting milestone, standing out at the RBC Training Ground — a free, nationwide event open to all Canadians aged 14 to 25, with no invitation required. Whether you’re an individual athlete or attending with your school, anyone can sign up and participate in this unique opportunity to be discovered by Olympic talent scouts.
While the event welcomes all eligible youth, James Cardinal McGuigan who regulaly train at York University were encouraged to attend by some former Olympians. This recognition highlights the school’s growing reputation for athletic excellence and commitment to developing the next generation of elite athletes.
RBC Training Ground is a national talent identification program created to uncover Canada's future Olympic stars. Participants are tested on core athletic abilities in front of national sport organizations and high-performance coaches. While thousands across the country register each year, James Cardinal McGuigan's personal invitation speaks volumes about the program’s belief in the talent being cultivated at the school.
At the event, students had the extraordinary chance to meet and be inspired by Olympic athletes:
Brandie Wilkerson, Silver Medalist (Beach Volleyball, 2024 Paris Olympics)
Ryan Sommer, Bronze Medalist (Bobsled, 2022 Beijing Olympics)
Cynthia Appiah, (Bobsled, 2022 Beijing Olympics)
Jordan "Jumpman" Stewart, Canada’s #1 ranked Taekwondo athlete
Their presence elevated the experience for students, providing firsthand motivation and stories of perseverance, discipline, and national pride.
Nick Vescio, the HPA Coordinator at JCM, expressed his pride: “Being the only school in Toronto personally invited to attend RBC Training Ground speaks volumes about the dedication and passion of our athletes. They’ve worked so hard for this, and it’s great to see them recognized.”
Principal Bisceglia, alongside the dedicated staff, has played a vital role in creating a supportive environment where student-athletes can thrive — a commitment clearly reflected in this achievement.
Student-athlete Adnal O. shared: “It’s an incredible honor to represent our school at such a high-profile event. We’ve trained hard for moments like these, and we’re ready to give it our all.”
While RBC Training Ground remains open to all young athletes, James Cardinal McGuigan’s involvement highlights the heights that can be achieved through passion, support, and community. Their participation serves as an inspiration not only for their peers at the school, but also for young athletes across Toronto and beyond.
If you're between the ages of 14 and 25 and dream of becoming an Olympian — you don’t need an invitation. Just like the students at James Cardinal McGuigan, you can register and take your shot at the RBC Training Ground.
