The soccer journey of Samir Gebtrys, once a standout midfielder for the James Cardinal McGuigan Wolves, has taken a monumental leap forward. The 20-year-old Toronto native has officially signed his first professional contract with Dragon City FC, a rising club in the UAE Pro League, based in the vibrant heart of Dubai.

This marks a turning point not only for Gebtrys but for the legacy of McGuigan's soccer program. Long respected in Ontario for producing tough, tactically intelligent players, but rarely one who makes the leap to international professional ranks.

Humble Beginnings in North York

Samir Gebtrys’ journey began on the cracked concrete courts of North York, where he first kicked a ball as a child with friends after school. Coaches at McGuigan quickly noticed his natural vision, composure on the ball, and relentless work ethic. Under the guidance of his coaches, Gebtrys was the heart and soul of the team.

“Samir always played like the game meant everything to him, but never like he had anything to prove. That’s rare,” said DiRenzo. “He was the heartbeat of our team, technically gifted, calm under pressure, and one of the hardest-working kid I’ve ever coached.”

From Local Talent to International Prospect

After high school, Gebtrys trained with Toronto North FC in League1 Ontario and later joined an elite development program in Spain, where he caught the eye of scouts from across Europe and the Middle East. His blend of North American grit and European style composure made him a unique prospect.

But it was Dragon City FC, an ambitious club in Dubai known for giving young players a real shot at top flight football, that made the first move.

“I knew it was the right step,” said Gebtrys in a statement. “Dragon City believes in youth, and they’ve built a system that values development and creativity. The moment they offered, I knew I could grow there and not just as a player, but as a person.”

A City of Fire and Dreams

Dragon City FC, based in one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Dubai, has been making waves with its modern training facilities, strong youth academy, and competitive play in the UAE Pro League. Gebtrys joins a roster featuring a mix of local Emirati talent and international flair from Brazil, Nigeria, and Eastern Europe.

He is expected to play a key role as a deep-lying playmaker the "engine room" of the midfield.

A Message to McGuigan and Beyond

In an emotional message to his former coach, Gebtrys gave a shoutout to his former high school teammates, coaches, and the community that raised him:

“To everyone at JCM, you gave me my start. You taught me to fight, to dream, and to love the game. I carry all of you with me to Dubai.”

Looking Ahead

With a three-year deal signed and preseason training already underway in Dubai’s blistering heat, Gebtrys is focused and hungry. For many young players, this would be the destination. For Samir, it’s just the next step.

Perhaps, one day, we’ll see Samir Gebtrys don the red and white of Canada, proving once more that greatness can rise from schoolyard dreams — even in the shadow of a high school in North York.
