On October 16 and 17, Grade 9 students from James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School recently took part in an exciting Financial Literacy Trip to BallMatics Academy, combining the worlds of basketball and financial education in a unique and engaging experience.

Students had the opportunity to play basketball alongside BallMatics coaches—inspiring mentors from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life who shared not only their athletic skills but also their personal journeys. The energy on the court was matched by thoughtful discussions in the classroom, as students participated in a financial literacy workshop that connected real-world applications of simple and compound interest to everyday decisions about investing and borrowing money.

Adding to the experience was the setting itself: a former gear factory transformed into a state-of-the-art basketball training facility. The innovative reuse of space offered students a real example of how creativity and vision can drive meaningful transformation—both in business and in life.

This trip was a great reminder that learning can happen anywhere and that financial literacy, like basketball, is a skill that grows with practice, strategy, and teamwork.

A big thank you to BallMatics Academy and QSLA Sports for hosting our students and to all the Grade 9 Math teachers who helped make this day a success. The excitement on our students’ faces truly said it all. Math can be powerful, fun, and full of movement!
