Congratulations to Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) student-athlete Elijah R., who is making headlines around the world as he proudly represents Canada, Toronto FC, and his school, James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School, at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.

A standout talent from McGuigan’s High Performance Athletics Program, Elijah has long been recognized as one of the most gifted young players in the country. Now, he’s proving that his skill and determination place him among the very best in the world. In Canada’s opening match against Uganda, the national team faced a tough challenge, trailing 0–1 late in the game. But, in the 88th minute, Elijah delivered a moment of brilliance scoring a crucial goal that completely shifted the game’s momentum. His equalizer inspired Canada to rally, and the team went on to secure a 2–1 victory. It was a defining moment not just for the team, but for Elijah personally, as he showcased his talent, composure, and leadership on soccer’s biggest youth stage. This is Canada's first ever win at a U17 World Cup.

Elijah also won FIFA man of the match.

Everyone at James Cardinal McGuigan and across the TCDSB community is immensely proud of Elijah’s achievements. His dedication both in the classroom and on the field embodies the values of perseverance, excellence, and faith that the Board strives to nurture in all its students.

Elijah’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work and belief and serves as an inspiration to young athletes across Canada who dare to dream big!
