James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School hosted an Area 3 Math Hub, welcoming Grade 7 and 8 teachers from our feeder schools St. Charles Garnier, St. Martha, and St. Francis de Sales Catholic Schools to observe a Grade 9 math lesson and discuss ways to support students transitioning to secondary mathematics. The event was made possible with the support of Principal Antonio Bisceglia and was further supported by Cristina Fernandes, Executive Superintendent of Student Achievement, Innovation and Well-Being, and Shawna Campbell, Executive Superintendent of Area 3. Principals from all three feeder schools were also in attendance.

The lesson for Period 2 was collaboratively planned by Ms. Ilies, Ms. Jamil, and Ms. Thykootathil, and co-taught by Ms. Ilies and Ms. Jamil. Students showcased their mathematical expertise by exploring algebra tiles and working in groups to solve algebraic expressions, giving visiting teachers a firsthand look at how hands-on materials support conceptual understanding at the secondary level.

Ms. Thykootathil and Ms. DeMarco delivered valuable information aimed at closing gaps and supporting the transition of learning. JCM remains committed to working closely with its feeder schools to ensure every student feels prepared for secondary school.

Thank you to the teachers and principals from St. Charles Garnier, St. Martha, and St. Francis de Sales, and to Ms. Jamil, Ms. Ilies, Ms. Thykootathil, Ms. DeMarco, and all the Period 2 students for an outstanding event!
