James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School’s High Performance Athletics program reached another exciting moment on May 30, 2026, as our student-athletes took part in RBC Training Ground at the University of Toronto. This national event is designed to discover Canada’s future Olympians and gives young athletes a chance to test themselves in front of high performance coaches and sport organizations.

This marked the second year that McGuigan athletes have participated, and it was clear how much the experience has continued to grow in value. RBC Training Ground is open to all Canadians between the ages of 14 and 25, giving anyone the opportunity to compete and be identified. For McGuigan students, it was not just about performance, but about learning, exploring, and stepping into a new level of sport.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was the exposure to sports that many athletes had never considered before. Through the testing and conversations with coaches, students began to see how their speed, strength, and athleticism could translate into completely different sports and future opportunities. It opened their eyes to new pathways and possibilities beyond the sports they currently play.

Many of the High Performance Athletics (HPA) students, who regularly train at York University, were cheered on by current Olympians. That encouragement speaks to the growing reputation of the program and the belief in the talent coming out of McGuigan.

Throughout the event, students were able to experience what high performance sport truly looks and feels like. They connected with elite-level athletes, heard stories about dedication and resilience, and even had the chance to hold an Olympic gold medal. For many, it was a powerful moment that made their goals feel real and within reach.

Nick Vescio, HPA Coordinator at McGuigan, shared his thoughts on the experience. "In our second year attending, you can really see the impact this has on our athletes. It is not just about how they perform on the day. It is about opening their eyes to new opportunities and helping them understand what is possible. I am extremely proud of how they represented our school."

The staff at McGuigan continue to play an important role in building an environment where student athletes can succeed. Their support has helped create a program that encourages growth, discipline, and ambition both in the classroom and in sport.

For the students, the day was both exciting and eye-opening. One athlete shared that it was an amazing opportunity to try something new and compete at a high level, and that it helped them realize there are many different paths in sport. Some JCM athletes have already received interest from national sport agencies.

As RBC Training Ground continues its search for the next generation of Canadian Olympians, McGuigan’s athletes have once again shown that with the right support and mindset, anything is possible. This experience is just one step in their journey, but it is one that will leave a lasting impact as they continue to chase their goals.
