James Culnan Hosts Parent Session on Supporting Student Well-Being

At James Culnan Catholic School, families were invited to a Parents Learning As Educators (PLAE) session led by Principal Persad and Vice Principal Harispuru focused on supporting children in Grades 1–8 with managing stress and anxiety, particularly during assessment periods such as EQAO. The session highlighted how stress and anxiety can show up in children, physically, emotionally, and academically, and emphasized that these responses are normal but require supportive strategies from both home and school. Parents gained a clearer understanding of EQAO as a provincial assessment that provides a snapshot of student learning, rather than a measure that defines their child’s overall abilities.

Throughout the session, practical and relatable strategies were shared to help parents support their children before, during, and after tests. School leaders emphasized the importance of reframing conversations at home to focus on effort, growth, and resilience rather than performance. Parents explored simple yet effective approaches such as establishing consistent routines, encouraging healthy sleep and nutrition habits, and teaching children calming techniques like deep breathing and positive self-talk. Real-life examples were used to demonstrate how small changes in language and daily routines can significantly reduce anxiety and build student confidence.

The session also reinforced the critical role of parent voice and partnership in student well-being and success. Families were encouraged to maintain open communication with teachers and to seek support when signs of ongoing anxiety are present. Principal Persad and Vice Principal Harispuru closed the session by reminding parents that every child learns differently and that a calm, consistent, and supportive home environment is one of the most powerful ways to help children navigate challenges with confidence. The PLAE session reflected the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering student well-being, resilience, and a positive approach to learning.
