Last week, students from the Grade 11 Leadership class at Monsignor Percy Johnson (MPJ) Catholic Secondary School proudly presented retired Corporal Terry Hlywka of Legion 286 with the proceeds from their MPJ Remembrance Day Initiative: the Shrink Paper Poppies Fundraiser.
The project was a school-wide effort rooted in creativity, remembrance, and community service. Each poppy was individually designed, cut, painted, and baked by students, then transformed into pins or keychains. The handcrafted items were sold throughout the school, with all funds supporting local veterans through Legion 286.
The initiative was guided by teachers Ms. Mamais and Ms. Fulmer, whose leadership helped students bring their vision to life. MPJ staff and students across the school community also contributed to the fundraiser’s success through their participation and support.
The presentation to Corporal Hlywka highlighted MPJ’s ongoing commitment to honouring Canada’s veterans and ensuring that the spirit of remembrance continues to thrive among younger generations.
