On Thursday, February 19, Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School commemorated the 30th anniversary of Black History Month in Canada and 33 years of celebrating African Canadian Heritage Month within the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB).
This school-wide assembly, led by the MPJ Black Culture Club, opened with the TCDSB African Ancestry Acknowledgement and a powerful student-led rendition of the Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Students also presented an Afro dance performance, paying homage to African and Afro-Caribbean cultures through movement, rhythm, and storytelling. We were pleased to welcome Black parents and elders, along with members of the TCDSB Equity and Community Relations Department whose presence enriched the celebrations.
For over 400 years, Black people have been part of Canada’s story-making history. This celebration highlighted the enduring contributions of Black and African Canadians to nation-building and to shaping the TCDSB into the diverse and culturally rich institution it is today. The assembly also reflected on how African Canadian Heritage Month, also known as Black History Month, took root within the TCDSB, honouring the vision, advocacy, and perseverance of those who paved the way.
In particular, we paid tribute to retired TCDSB Black educators and former principals such as Dr. Alice Bhyat, Dr. Jean Augustine, our first Black principal, Ms. Althea Parson, Mr. Kirk Mark, and others whose leadership and legacy continue to inspire future generations.
A highlight of the assembly was the celebration of African fashion. Our MPJ FLAME models proudly presented the Afro FLAME Fashion Show, showcasing the beauty, strength, craftsmanship, and distinctive silhouettes of African design in a vibrant expression of culture, creativity, and excellence.
