Students at Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School have a lot to celebrate after receiving the prestigious Merit Awards, recognizing their academic achievement, resilience, and dedication to community service.

The Merit program was established in 1996 by a group of Toronto residents committed to supporting Grade 11 and 12 students in staying in school and pursuing post-secondary education. The initiative has grown significantly over the years, beginning with just 20 bursaries in its early stages and expanding to 332 awards granted last year. The late John Sopinka served as the program’s first Honorary Chair, underscoring its strong connection to leadership and public service values.

Today, the Merit Award Program partners with 95 schools across the Greater Toronto Area, recognizing students who demonstrate perseverance in both academics and community involvement, often while overcoming significant personal challenges.

At Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School, staff proudly acknowledged eight student recipients this year. The award winners include Andrea V. ($500), Gracious A. ($1,000), Jeffery A. ($2,000), Kareem K. ($1,000), McGeorge G. ($1,000), Miracle E. ($1,000), Nasmah K. ($1,000), and Ruscianelle T. ($1,000).

Principal Christine Kim praised the students for their dedication and resilience, noting that the recognition reflects both individual effort and the supportive school community behind them. The awards highlight not only academic success but also the importance of contributing positively to the wider community.
