On Wednesday, February 25, Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL) Catholic School hosted a breathtaking African Heritage Month celebration that also coincided with Pink Shirt Day. The result was a meaningful opportunity to promote cultural pride while taking a collective stand against bullying — proving that when we celebrate our diversity, we build a stronger and more inclusive school community.
The heart of the celebration was an African Cultural Fashion Show, where staff, students, and parents proudly showcased stunning traditional attire set to music from their regions. A beautiful cultural tapestry was represented, including:
Elegant Habesha kemis from Ethiopia and Eritrea, as well as traditional Sudanese attire from the Horn of Africa
Bold West African patterns, including Ghanaian Kente, the beaded crown worn in Nigeria, and vibrant prints from Angola
Bright fabrics representing the spirit of Kenya in East Africa
The dynamic flags and energy of the Caribbean diaspora, including Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago
Some of the most touching moments came from the cheers of students as they watched their peers walk the stage alongside parents and school staff. The sense of pride, joy, and unity was felt throughout the gymnasium.
Following the fashion show, Ms. Anthonia Ikemeh (Early Language Program teacher) had everyone on their feet, transforming the gym into an electric Afrobeats dance party and closing the celebration on a high-energy note.
Many thanks to the OLOL Equity Club, the Mental Health Action Team, and all staff and students who helped bring this fantastic celebration of heritage and kindness to life.
