In the fall, Our Lady of Lourdes staff decided to align one of our School Improvement and Equity goals with a public speaking competition rooted in social justice. This activity also served as a cornerstone for Year 2 of our Toronto Catholic District School Board Pastoral Plan: Growing in Knowledge, with Justice.

From Grades 2 through 8, our students rose to the occasion, researching and writing compelling speeches on critical issues from their own unique points of view, including:

  • Homelessness and poverty

  • Bullying prevention

  • Gender equity and family roles

  • The universal right to education

  • Healthcare and food security

The culmination of their efforts came earlier this week when the winning speeches were shared, serving as a powerful launch to Catholic Education Week. It was a privilege to welcome parents, resource teachers, and our parish pastor to join us for our Celebration of Excellence.

A huge congratulations to all of our classroom winners, and to Liya (Grade 4), who represented our school at the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Mic Drop competition and placed second overall.

By finding their voices, our students are not only becoming effective communicators, but also developing the confidence and skills to stand up and be heard. Many thanks to our dedicated teachers, parents, and students, who continue to lead with courage and compassion while advocating for a more just and equitable world.
