The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) was proudly represented at the 2026 Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), Toronto Chapter 56 Annual Awards Dinner, where staff and students were recognized for their outstanding contributions and achievements in education. Each year, the Ontario Council for Exceptional Children honours educators, paraprofessionals, and parents who have demonstrated exceptional dedication in supporting children with exceptionalities. The student awards celebrate excellence in academics, arts, technology, community involvement, self-advocacy and student transition.
Among this year's top honourees among staff was Mr. Angelo Tocco, a teacher at Dante Alighieri Academy Catholic Secondary School, who received the prestigious 2026 Teacher of the Year Award. Mr. Tocco was recognized for his unwavering commitment to accessibility, inclusion and equity in education. Guided by his own lived experiences, he has worked tirelessly to create more inclusive learning environments within his classroom, school and across the TCDSB. In addition to his work within the board, Mr. Tocco has played a key role in advancing accessibility initiatives and has advised the Government of Ontario on accessibility standards. His advocacy began at a time when conversations around accessibility and inclusion were far less prominent, making him a pioneer in the field. A passionate and dedicated advocate, Mr. Tocco's leadership continues to positively impact students, staff and the broader educational community.
TCDSB students were also celebrated during the evening for their accomplishments and personal growth. Davielle Z., a Grade 7 student at St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, received a "Yes I Can Student" Award in recognition of her achievement and participation in the PAST Program. Through the program, Davielle worked toward goals in social thinking, communication and self-regulation. Chyan B., a Grade 8 student at Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, was also honoured with a "Yes I Can Student" Award. Chyan achieved an average above 75 percent while participating in the Thinking Math Classrooms program, where students collaborated in groups to solve complex problem-solving questions.
The awards highlight the importance of continuing the ongoing work of fostering an inclusive environment where every student and staff member can succeed across all areas in the education sector.
