As part of the Drama workshops at St. Aidan Catholic School, our Grade 7 students embarked on a unique journey. Instead of the typical fairy tale adaptations, they chose to bring to life a beloved childhood story, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". This classic tale, which we all know and love, was adapted to ELP and Grade 1, inspiring the creation of props, characters, music, and a story that would soon captivate our audience.
We created a special effect, making the caterpillar fat and turning it into a butterfly. We used visual art classes to paint colourful things, sew coloured fabric, and cut cardboard props. As we proceeded to the rehearsal, we added a tree to highlight the importance of eating healthy and facing the sugary food that the caterpillar ate on Saturday. We worked with light effects to show day and night.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was not just a story we told, but a project that brought the class together. Students shared their talents and skills both backstage and in the big performance, demonstrating a level of teamwork and collaboration that we can all be proud of. We presented twice, with two groups of actors, and even decided to return with juniors to create a craft based on the play.
As a result, drama classes were used to develop skills to share with everyone. We received lots of laughter, hugs and a huge confidence boost for the next one!
