About Us
St. Alphonsus Catholic School was founded in 1969 to serve a growing Catholic community in midtown Toronto. At the time, nearby schools such as Holy Rosary and St. Clare were over capacity, making the development of a new school an important response to community needs. The building was officially blessed on November 22, 1970.
Since its opening, the school has remained a vibrant and welcoming community. With an enrolment of approximately 250 students, St. Alphonsus reflects a rich diversity of cultures and backgrounds. Many families are multilingual, with the most commonly spoken languages at home including English, Tigrinya, Spanish, Portuguese, and Amharic. A significant portion of students were also born outside of Canada.
In addition to its regular programming, St. Alphonsus offers a growing French Immersion program. The school also provides specialized support programs, including Multiple Exceptionality/Developmental Disabilities Intensive Support, Learning Disabilities Intensive Support, and the EMPOWER reading program.
Located on a quiet residential street off St. Clair Avenue, the school is a well-maintained facility with spacious classrooms and multiple outdoor play areas. Students within the boundary are able to walk to school, contributing to a strong sense of local community. A planned revitalization of the Kindergarten playground will further enhance outdoor learning and play spaces.
St. Alphonsus is guided by our motto of trust, friendship, and love. This spirit is reflected in the warm and inclusive atmosphere of the school, where students are encouraged to experience joy, belonging, and a strong sense of community.
