The Indigenous Education, Math, and Outdoor Education Departments were thrilled to welcome students from St. Jane Frances and St. Antoine Daniel Catholic Schools to the second Annual Gikino’amaagewigamig Ahki’ – Mother Earth’s Classroom at the beautiful Lake St. George Field Centre.
This unforgettable land-based learning experience immersed students in a variety of hands-on activities rooted in Indigenous knowledge and ways of learning. Throughout the day, students explored traditional teachings by making seed balls, learning fire-making skills, discovering the art of tipi building, and participating in lacrosse, a game with deep cultural significance to many Indigenous Nations.
Adding to the experience, students enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch beneath the trees, surrounded by the natural beauty of Lake St. George, an ideal setting to connect with the land, one another, and Indigenous perspectives.
What made the day especially meaningful was the incredible spirit demonstrated by the students. Their curiosity, respect, kindness, enthusiasm, and thoughtful questions reflected a genuine eagerness to learn and engage with each activity. Their positive participation helped make the day a truly memorable and inspiring experience for everyone involved.
This collaborative initiative reflects the shared commitment of the Indigenous Education, Math, and Outdoor Education Departments to showcasing how Indigenous brilliance, when woven together with mathematical thinking and land-based learning, creates rich, authentic, and transformative educational experiences for students.
The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff, facilitators, and community partners who made this day possible. The TCDSB was especially thankful to the Indigenous, Math, and Outdoor Education Departments for their ongoing collaboration and support, and to the students of St. Jane Frances and St. Antoine Daniel Catholic Schools for embracing the day with open minds and open hearts.
Miigwetch/Thank you for helping make the second Annual Mother Earth’s Classroom such a meaningful celebration of learning, community, and connection to the land.
