Our School History and Tradition
St. Augustine Catholic School opened in 1969 to serve a predominantly Italian community. Today, the school reflects the rich cultural diversity of Toronto, with students and families representing many linguistic and cultural backgrounds. English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, multilingual staff, and a settlement worker support newcomer families by providing assistance with language learning, education, housing, employment, and community services.
Grounded in Catholic beliefs, traditions, and teachings, St. Augustine is committed to educating the whole child. We recognize that every student brings unique strengths, interests, and learning needs, and we strive to provide an inclusive environment where all learners can succeed.
Literacy and numeracy are central to our academic program. Teachers use differentiated, evidence-informed instructional strategies to support diverse learning styles and provide targeted interventions when needed. Additional supports, including the EMPOWER Reading Program, Junior Literacy initiatives, special education services, and guidance support, help ensure students receive the assistance they need to achieve success.
Students explore their interests through a wide range of artistic, athletic, leadership, and service opportunities. Enrichment activities include performances, Scientists in School presentations, athletic teams, the Me to We Club, food drives, and local and global service initiatives.
Respect, responsibility, and self-discipline are promoted through our Code of Behaviour, which emphasizes restorative practices, conflict resolution, and collaboration among students, staff, and families. Faith is woven throughout school life through daily prayer, liturgical celebrations, and reflection during the seasons of Advent and Lent, helping students grow as compassionate and responsible members of the Catholic community.
