Only we might have to change the I from International to Intergalactic…
On Tuesday, March 10, our Grade 9 science students at St. Basil-the-Great College School went on a virtual tour of the QUEST-DMC (QUantum Enhanced Superfluid Technologies for Dark Matter and Cosmology) dark matter experiment running in the physics department at Lancaster University in the UK.
Dark matter dominates the universe. It is five times as abundant as all the stars, planets, and galaxies we can see. Yet we don’t know what it is. And we’ve been searching for almost a century! This world-leading research hopes to discover these elusive particles, and our students had the privilege of peeking behind the curtain.
Many thanks to Lancaster University and our hosts, Dr. Joseph McLaughlin, Dr. Theo Noble, and PhD candidate Tineke Salmon–three members of the research team working on the experiment.
