The St. Benedict Catholic School library was delighted to welcome York University for two engaging workshops: Environmental Disasters and Musical Art with STEM Experience. These learning opportunities provided Grade 5 students with the chance to explore the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through hands-on activities, creative exploration and interactive discovery.
The workshops featured a hands-on, discovery-based approach that placed students at the centre of their learning. Working collaboratively in teams, students participated in guided projects and experiments that helped them develop a deeper understanding of STEM concepts. By exploring real-world challenges and experimenting with new ideas, students connected classroom learning to practical applications while strengthening their creativity, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The Environmental Disasters workshop encouraged students to explore the science behind environmental challenges and consider how scientific knowledge and innovative thinking can help us better understand the world around us. Meanwhile, the Musical Art with STEM Experience workshop offered an opportunity to discover the connections between creativity, music, art and technology. These interactive experiences demonstrated that STEM extends beyond traditional science and mathematics to include artistic expression, imagination and innovative thinking.
A special highlight was the York University student who facilitated the workshops. With her passion for science and engineering, she created an inviting and encouraging learning environment where students felt motivated to participate, explore and share their ideas. Her desire to inspire young learners helped bring STEM concepts to life and demonstrated how curiosity and perseverance can open doors to future opportunities in science, technology and engineering.
St. Benedict Catholic School is grateful to York University for providing these enriching learning experiences. By bringing university-level knowledge and interactive STEM activities into the school community, this initiative helped inspire students to think beyond the classroom, embrace new challenges and explore the possibilities that science, technology and creativity have to offer.
