Dear TCDSB Community:

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for the Greater Toronto Area due to the Quebec wildfires. It is anticipated that this special statement will last for the rest of this week - however, conditions may change.

Environment Canada’s Air Quality Health Index ranges from 1 (low risk) to 10 (very high risk). Currently, the Air Quality Health Index for Toronto is 7 (high risk). We recognize the presence and smell of smoke are strong within our communities.

Earlier today we recommended to schools that they may wish to consider indoor recess and reschedule any outdoor activities if students and staff have respiratory conditions. We also reminded schools that using classroom HEPA Air Purifiers is helpful in further reducing smoke particulates indoors.

The decisions above are based on the criteria outlined by the Ministry, including:

  1. In areas where the risk is identified as “Moderate 4 – 6”, or lower there is no need to modify usual outdoor activities for the general population unless individuals experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation.
  2. In areas where the risk is identified as “High 7 – 10”, it is recommended to reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors and keep children and staff indoors.

We will continue to monitor the air quality health index in all our communities and consult with local public health partners and respond accordingly based on the conditions tomorrow (June 7, 2023).

Thank you for your understanding.
