Over the past two days, St. Thomas More and St. Dorothy Catholic Schools each hosted the Haudenosaunee Games, facilitated by the Haudenosaunee Lacrosse Program and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Indigenous Education Department. Students from Kindergarten through Grade 8 spent the day outdoors, engaging in a transformative learning experience filled with opportunities to connect with one another through traditional games, song, and movement.
Through hands-on and strategic activities that required patience and teamwork, such as the Mohawk Hoop and Spear Game, Tug of War, Hand Games, and a Round Dance led by Bear Creek drummer Nathan Roy, students engaged with teachings passed down through generations. These activities highlighted the values of community, responsibility, respect, and shared learning, while creating opportunities for students to celebrate one another's unique gifts and to experience joy. In doing so, they deepened their understanding of how Indigenous brilliance shines through authentic relationships, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging.
The TCDSB is extremely grateful to the Haudenosaunee Lacrosse Program for their continued partnership and for bringing these teachings to life for students across the system. On behalf of the Indigenous Education Department, thank you to the schools, staff, and students for welcoming this experience and for the energy they brought to the games.
