More than 70 students from Catholic schools across Scarborough gathered at St. Richard Catholic School on June 12 to celebrate inclusion, teamwork, and community through sport during the annual Champions in Motion event.
Hosted by student leaders at St. Richard Catholic School in partnership with Special Olympics Ontario, this year’s event featured bocce ball, providing students with an opportunity to learn new skills while building friendships and fostering an inclusive environment.
Students from Grades 6 to 8 representing St. Dominic Savio, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Nicholas, St. Jean de Brebeuf, St. Elizabeth of Seton, St. Bartholomew, and Sacred Heart Catholic Schools participated in the day’s activities.
The event began with students learning the fundamentals of bocce ball before joining inter-school teams to compete in three rounds of friendly competition. Throughout the day, participants enjoyed music, dancing and a variety of activities designed to encourage collaboration, sportsmanship, and fun.
Champions in Motion aims to promote inclusion through physical activity, bringing students together regardless of ability and creating opportunities for meaningful connections through sport.
Staff at St. Richard Catholic School expressed their gratitude to Ryan and the team at Special Olympics Ontario for helping make the event possible and for their ongoing commitment to creating inclusive experiences for students.
The day was marked by enthusiasm, teamwork, and community spirit, leaving participants with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the power of sport to bring people together.
