Dear TCDSB Community:

We would like to inform you about an important change to the Toronto Catholic District School Board's calendar that was approved at the Regular Board Meeting on the evening of January 30, 2024.

On April 8, 2024, North America will experience a total solar eclipse. While some areas in Ontario will witness the eclipse in its totality, Toronto will be on the outer edge of its path. The timing of the eclipse, between 2 PM and 4 PM, coincides with the dismissal hours of our schools.

How does this impact you?

  • The Board has rescheduled the Professional Activity (PA) Day from Friday, April 19, 2024, to Monday, April 8, 2024.
  • As a result, regular school operations for all will resume on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

This decision comes after careful consultation with the Ministry of Education, Toronto Public Health, and other school boards with whom we share transportation services. Toronto Catholic prioritizes the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Toronto Catholic is aligned with many other Catholic and public school boards in the Greater Toronto and Golden Horseshoe Area, who have also similarly adjusted their calendars. The Ministry of Education recognizes the importance of this adjustment and has encouraged school boards to prioritize safety in such unique circumstances.

We hope that communicating this change well in advance provides sufficient time for families and staff to adjust their schedules accordingly. We understand that such changes can impact routines, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment and support in maintaining a safe environment for our entire community.

Dr. Brendan Browne
Director of Education
