Mission Statement

We believe that all children can learn given the benefits of best teaching practice in a safe and caring environment built on gospel values.

Faith-Based Learning

At St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic School, our religious education program is rooted in the catechetical program approved by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. This program forms the foundation of our faith instruction.

To nurture a Catholic environment, we actively practice the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Acts of charity—such as food drives, ShareLife campaigns, and support for families in need both locally and globally—are encouraged as expressions of Gospel values in action.

Safe and Caring Environment

In alignment with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Mission Statement, our school provides a safe and welcoming learning environment. This includes a Safe Arrival Program, which ensures student attendance is closely monitored and that communication with families is consistent and timely.

Student Behaviour and Well-Being

Clear expectations for student behaviour are essential to a respectful school culture. These expectations are shared through:

  • Student assemblies

  • Newsletters

  • Morning announcements

  • Classroom discussions

We regularly review and reinforce these expectations throughout the year. Our commitment to student well-being is reflected in the TCDSB Violence Prevention Policy and our Code of Conduct, which is developed collaboratively by staff, students, and parents. This code is included in each student’s planner agenda.

Assessment and Instruction

We believe that all children can learn and should be given opportunities to demonstrate their learning in ways that reflect their individual strengths and learning styles.

Teachers use the Teaching Learning Critical Pathway model, which centers each instructional cycle around a “Big Question.” To support 21st-century learning, we continue to invest in technology, including Smart Boards, and emphasize computer and media literacy through ongoing staff training and equipment upgrades.

Student Support and Enrichment

To meet the diverse needs of our students, teachers:

  • Modify and accommodate lessons for differentiated instruction.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and resource staff.

  • Access support from specialized personnel assigned to the school.

We also offer:

  • Special programs for students with specific learning needs.

  • Peer coaching and adult volunteers for remedial support.

  • A one-day-per-week enrichment program for formally identified gifted students.

Athletics and Physical Development

We encourage students to grow in their physical abilities through a variety of sports and activities, including:

  • Soccer

  • Flag football

  • Basketball

  • Volleyball

  • Cross-country running

  • Track and field

  • Indoor cricket house league

  • House leagues

Arts and Music

The love of music is celebrated at our school through:

  • Singing at liturgical celebrations

  • Participation in the school choir

  • Involvement in the Kiwanis Music Festival

Students also have opportunities to showcase their creativity through:

  • The Craft Club

  • The TCDSB Visual Arts Display

  • School dramatic productions, which highlight talent, teamwork, and achievement

School History and Tradition

St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic School was built in 1982, opening its doors to 163 students. Today, we are proud to serve a vibrant and diverse community of nearly 300 students.

Our school is named after St. Jean de Brebeuf, a French Jesuit missionary and martyr. He is remembered not only for his deep faith and strength of character but also for his cultural contributions—he wrote the first dictionary of the Huron language and composed the beloved Christmas carol, the "Huron Carol."

We honour his legacy by celebrating the virtues he embodied: Peacemaking, Charity, Courage, Love, Forgiveness, Compassion, and Faithfulness.
