Students in Ms. Balthazaar’s Grade 3 class at St. John Vianney Catholic School recently took part in a meaningful learning experience focused on community, culture, and connection. The class participated in the "Building Community through Indigenous Storytelling and Art" workshop, offered by the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s (TCDSB) Indigenous Education department.

The workshop featured a visit from Knowledge Keeper Diane Montreuil and presenter Michelle Fredericks, who guided students through lessons rooted in Indigenous perspectives and traditions. Through storytelling and interactive activities, students explored ways to strengthen friendships and learned practical strategies for resolving conflicts respectfully and effectively.

A key part of the experience included learning about the sharing circle, an important Indigenous practice that encourages listening, respect, and open communication. Students were also introduced to water teachings, deepening their understanding of the importance of water in Indigenous cultures and the responsibility to care for it.

To conclude the workshop, the class participated in a symbolic activity that reinforced their commitment to community. Students signed and accepted a tablecloth, which will serve as an ongoing reminder of their shared responsibility to support one another and work together in a positive and inclusive environment.

The experience left a lasting impression on the students, who expressed excitement and appreciation for the opportunity to learn in such a meaningful and engaging way.
