Students at St. John Vianney Catholic School are immersing themselves in Spanish language and culture as they prepare for the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Spanish Language Day on April 23.
In the lead-up to the celebration, the school community has come alive with vibrant displays and creative learning activities. A newly decorated bulletin board showcases students’ colourful artwork and thoughtful representations of Spanish culture.
Language learning has also taken centre stage in daily routines. Students from the school’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program have been delivering morning announcements in Spanish, introducing new words and phrases to their peers and fostering a broader appreciation for the language across the school.
In the classroom, Grade 3 students have been exploring Spanish vocabulary through literature. After reading Rainbow Weaver, a story that blends English and Spanish, students participated in a creative writing activity. They wrote letters from the perspective of the book’s main character, incorporating newly learned Spanish words into their work.
The combination of art, language practice, and storytelling reflects the school’s commitment to language learning and multiculturalism. As Spanish Language Day approaches, students and staff are building excitement while strengthening their connection to a global language and its rich cultural heritage.
