Parents at Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School gathered on May 27 for an evening dedicated to supporting teen mental health and strengthening communication between parents and adolescents.
The school's Catholic School Parent Council (CSPC), led by chair Raquel Rodrigues, partnered with Toronto Public Health (TPH) to present "Bouncing Back," a parent engagement event focused on building resiliency in teens and fostering effective communication within families.
The session provided parents with practical strategies and opportunities to discuss common challenges faced by teenagers and their families. Topics included cultivating optimism, finding common ground for meaningful conversations and supporting teens through difficult situations.
Presenters from TPH led interactive discussions and hands-on activities designed to encourage parent participation and dialogue. Attendees explored real-life scenarios and shared ideas on how to better support their children's mental health and well-being.
In addition to the presentations, parents received resources and literature related to adolescent development and mental health. The event also offered opportunities for attendees to connect with school staff and other parents.
Principal Michael Wetzel, vice-principals Lisa Bailey and Cherie Wardle, along with guidance counsellors, social workers and other support staff, were available throughout the evening to share information about resources and services available through the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB).
The event also featured dinner, refreshments and several raffle draws for door prizes.
The evening was a successful and engaging opportunity for parents to learn, connect and gain valuable tools to support their teens both at home and at school.
