Students at St. Benedict Catholic School recently experienced science and learning come to life through the popular Hatch-the-Chick Program, hosted in the school library and sponsored by the school's Catholic School Parent Council (CSPC).
Over the course of 21 days, students eagerly gathered in the library to observe eggs incubating and anxiously awaited the arrival of their new fluffy friends. The interactive program provided students with a unique opportunity to explore cross-curricular learning themes, including life cycles, chicken embryo development, and the needs of living things.
Using library resources and guided lessons, students researched and learned about the incubation and hatching process while also discovering how to create a safe and caring environment for the chicks once they arrived.
Under the guidance of school librarian Ms. A. Scaccia, the chicks were lovingly named after saints: Cecilia, Pio, Francesca, Benedict, and Rosie. The names quickly became familiar throughout the school community as students and staff embraced the new additions with excitement and affection.
Every class at St. Benedict had the opportunity to visit and interact with the chicks during their two-week stay in the library. The program brought joy and curiosity to students of all ages, with smiles and laughter filling the space each day.
The Hatch-the-Chick Program not only created memorable experiences for students but also encouraged hands-on learning, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for all living creatures on our planet.
