Inspired by the mission of Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez and the promise of the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, St. Oscar Romero Catholic Secondary School is deeply committed to nurturing all students as whole people from diverse backgrounds with a variety of God-given gifts and talents.

Recognizing the need for schooling to be responsive and innovative within today’s 21st century educational landscape, St. Oscar Romero Catholic Secondary School provides a safe and inclusive space for students to grow as Catholic graduates and global citizens who can learn, unlearn and relearn in diverse ways.

From in-class enrichment to community partnerships, athletics, clubs and more, all students are provided with the opportunity and support to grow as critical, creative, collaborative and communicative thinkers who have the positive mindset and transferable skills to be their very best.

Ultimately, as a school community, we thrive to ensure that all students are able to achieve their success and become what God intends them to be in school and beyond. From academics to sports, extracurriculars and specialized programming, the Romero Family is grounded in faith and the belief that all students can fulfill their God-given potential.

Beautiful is the moment in which we understand that we are no more than an instrument of God; we live only as long as God wants us to live; we can only do as much as God makes us able to do; we are only as intelligent as God would have us be. - Saint Oscar Romero

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

The St. Oscar Romero community recognizes that education must address the multi-dimensional needs of all students. This responsibility involves providing Catholic education directed at developing the spiritual, physical, intellectual, social and emotional well-being of each student. It is therefore understood that all students have the right to a quality education that develops their potential.

Our common goal is to provide for our students an education that will best equip them to live successfully and responsibly in a complex and changing world.

Our School History and Tradition

Painting of St. Oscar Romero

Established in 1989 as the first Catholic high school in the City of York, the original school consisted of 200 grade 9 students, 18 teachers and three support staff members housed in what was previously York Humber Secondary School. November 1992 marked the start of a 12 million dollar construction project that transformed the original building into a state-of-the-art facility. The school was officially opened and blessed at a special ceremony on May 7, 1995.

We look to St. Oscar Romero, our patron, as an example of the good news in action. Like Jesus Christ, he challenged and questioned the injustices and the suffering of the poor in his country. Through his writings, we can come to understand this man who is a role model for all students in our school community.
