On September 30, over 70 Chaminade College School students visited Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons, gaining valuable insight into the 17th-century French Jesuit mission to the Huron-Wendat people. Originally established in 1639, the mission grew to include barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a shelter for Indigenous visitors. By 1649, due to rising conflict, the site was abandoned and deliberately burned by its inhabitants.
During the visit, students explored the reconstructed site and participated in cultural activities such as making friendship bracelets, preparing, and tasting traditional fried bread, three sisters’ soup, and strawberry tea. This experience provided students with a meaningful opportunity to engage with Canadian history and Indigenous culture in an interactive setting.
