The students of Father Henry Carr's BSA pose for a group photo in the school hall

African Canadian Heritage Month at Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School was truly one to remember. This year, the students and staff decided to celebrate Black joy and highlight the successes of Black people specifically within the FHC community. Our school's Black Student Association (BSA) took on the responsibility of organizing a number of events that would foster positivity and pride within the school community.

One of the initiatives that the student body initiated is a series of events hosted each Wednesday throughout February entitled “FHC Alumni Voices: Lunch and Learn Series”. This was where students were invited to attend a presentation during their respective lunch period to learn more about various careers and listen to words of wisdom from graduates that have overcome adversity and are currently achieving their goals. Another event was a Student Owned Black Business Fair. This was where students were given the opportunity to showcase small businesses that they have started on their own. Businesses included; hair stylist, nail and eyelash technicians, clothing brands and more.

The month will end with the 2 Day “Afrochella” event. Day 1 will include a school assembly where the students will showcase their talents and cultural traditions. Day 2 will be the food and culture market where students and staff will have the opportunity to try dishes from the various cuisines in Africa and the Caribbean.

All of these events could not be possible without the tremendous efforts by the students of the BSA and the support of the staff and administration. See below for a complete list of the events and some of the pictures captured throughout this month:

  • Daily: Black Canadian Spotlight (Read during the morning announcements)
