Art and creative expression play an important role in exploring identity, building confidence, and fostering a sense of belonging. For many communities, including the Black community, art has long served as a way to share stories, celebrate heritage, and express individuality.
At Father Henry Carr Secondary School, students in the Grade 11 and 12 art classes recently had the opportunity to take part in The Creative Outlet Workshop, led by artist Jojo D. The workshop introduced students to gelli printmaking—a monoprint technique that allows for spontaneous, intuitive creation and personal expression.
While the session focused on building artistic technique and creativity, it also provided students a space for self-reflection and expression—key elements often found in culturally rooted art practices. Students experimented with textures, layers, and colour, developing unique works that reflected their own artistic voice.
Thank you to Jojo D for bringing this inspiring workshop to our school and sharing the craft of gelli printmaking with our students.
