At Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School, we were honoured to welcome Deb Smith and Olga Hilmer, the mother of Father John Douglas "Doug" Hilmer, CSB (1961–2025). to our school. During their visit, they generously donated a beautiful painting in honour of Father Hilmer and his enduring connection to our school community.
A proud member of Father Henry Carr’s second graduating class, Father Hilmer discovered the Basilian Fathers during his time at Carr. His experiences at Henry Carr Farm and Columbus Boys’ Camp, along with the influence of the priests who mentored him, helped lay the foundation for his vocation to the priesthood.
Father Hilmer went on to serve as a Basilian priest for 36 years, dedicating his life to faith, education, service, and community.
His journey from Carr student to Basilian priest is a powerful part of our school’s history and a lasting reminder of the impact our community can have on the lives of our students.
Faith. Service. Community. These values defined Father Hilmer’s life and continue to inspire the Father Henry Carr community today.
