Marshall McLuhan Students Showcase Research Excellence at the Science Rendezvous National

For the second consecutive year, Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School proudly participated in the Science Rendezvous National Festival, held at the University of Toronto St. George Campus in King's College Circle.

Science Rendezvous is Canada's largest annual science outreach festival, bringing together thousands of visitors for a day of discovery, innovation, and hands-on learning. The event featured interactive exhibits in physics, biology, chemistry, engineering, technology, and mathematics, inspiring curiosity through engaging, inquiry-based experiences. The festival also showcased attractions such as the Science Chase, the Science Fair, and live research demonstrations presented by more than 60 University of Toronto departments and community organizations from across the Greater Toronto Area.

As part of the festival, high school students presented their research projects to judges and members of the public. Marshall McLuhan students demonstrated outstanding scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and communication skills, earning top honours for their work:

  • Elena S. – First Place
Project: Martian: Machine-Learning Assisted Radiation Tracking with Intelligent Alerting Network

  • Yuyang L. – Second Place
Project: Attention-Integrated Motor Control System: Application on Robotic Limbs

Student reflections

"Participating in the Science Rendezvous National Festival at the University of Toronto was an incredible and rewarding experience. I was honoured to receive first place for my project and enjoyed presenting my research to the judges and answering their questions. Throughout the event, I had the opportunity to meet many talented and passionate students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), allowing me to learn about a wide range of innovative scientific projects. The judges were supportive and engaging, making the experience both educational and inspiring. In addition to the competition, I had a great time exploring the Science Street Festival, where I participated in a variety of interactive science experiments and activities. Overall, the event strengthened my passion for science and provided me with unforgettable memories and valuable connections." – Elena S.

"The 2026 Toronto Rendezvous Science Fair was a memorable experience in my scientific journey. It provided me with an opportunity to showcase my research and connect with others who share similar interests in science. I presented my research, 'Attention-Integrated Motor Control System: Application on Robotic Limbs,' to the judges and received valuable insights and feedback. I explained the motivation behind my research, which aims to assist individuals with motor disabilities, especially those living with limb amputations, by developing a real-time, non-invasive, and easy-to-operate prosthetic control method. I also shared my background research, innovative approaches, and the challenges I encountered throughout the process. Finally, I discussed the current limitations of my research while highlighting the feasibility of these systems. The judges recognized my dedication, shared thoughtful feedback, and identified opportunities for improvement. During the break, I explored other student projects and gained valuable insights into different fields of study while making connections with fellow participants. The lecture sessions also featured presentations from researchers in fields ranging from environmental science to neuroscience, providing valuable insight into how research is conducted and how data is collected. I was honoured to earn second place in the high school science fair. While the award was meaningful, it was the connections I made with other passionate individuals that made this experience truly unforgettable." – Yuyang L.

Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School is proud of its students for their outstanding achievements and exemplary representation of the school community. The school also extends its sincere appreciation to the dedicated teachers who mentored and supported students throughout the research process, fostering a passion for scientific inquiry, innovation, and lifelong learning. Congratulations to all participants on this remarkable accomplishment.
