On Thursday, December 11, the Black Student Associations (BSA) of St. John Henry Newman Catholic High School, St. Mother Teresa Catholic Academy and Madonna Catholic Secondary School came together for their third Annual Kwanzaa Celebration. The event was attended by Director of Education Dr. Brendan Browne, Associate Director of Corporate Services Derek Boyce, Superintendent of Education for Equity, Diversity, Indigenous Education and Community Relations Roy Fernandes, along with members of their teams, making it a truly special and joyous occasion.
In the weeks leading up to the celebration, students worked diligently to strengthen their knowledge of the meaning, principles, and symbols of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa, which means First Fruits, is an annual holiday observed from December 26 to January 1. This celebration affirms African family and social values while celebrating Black culture and unity. Central to the celebration are the Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba): Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
Through this celebration, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their heritage and internalize values that will help shape their futures. The event concluded with a variety of food from the African diaspora, vibrant cultural dancing, and fun games with prizes, creating a memorable experience for all who attended.
