In February, the Newman Women in Stem Club were awarded a grant from The Desjardins Foundation to support their efforts in (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) STEM outreach.
On Thursday, March 26, the St. John Henry Newman Women in STEM club welcomed Grade 6 students from St. Maria Goretti for a Future in Focus hands-on STEM Outreach Day. Guided by our Newman STEM student leaders, students jumped into a series of interactive activities all centered around colour and optics.
They experimented with substances that change colour in different pH levels, uncovered the science behind the bright colours seen in fireworks, and explored polymer science through fun, hands-on challenges. There were plenty of “wow” moments as students saw science come to life right in front of them- and may have even sparked a few future scientists, engineers, and innovators!
