On April 15, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from the Health and Wellness program at St. Joseph's College School attended a full-day workshop at SimKIDS, The Hospital for Sick Children.
Students toured the Sim Lab and were shown how scientific principles of vital signs apply in healthcare, viewed multiple task trainers and manikins, experienced lifelike simulations (from ICU environments to ambulance transport scenarios) in the Immersive Room, and created their own simulated wounds using special design makeup and dragon skin silicone.
After lunch, students were introduced to members of the SickKids simulation team who took time to share their education pathways and career journeys. To finish the day, students were split into two groups and participated in the Cardiac Crash CPR Game where they competed against each other while learning (and re-learning) basic CPR techniques, what to do in an emergency situation, and the importance of quick response in cardiac emergencies.
The Simulation program supports over 5,600 learners and facilitates more than 24,400 learner hours each year. The 11,500 sq. ft. Simulation Centre has four simulation suites, four debriefing rooms, six OSCE-style suites, two large multipurpose rooms for procedural training and large group sessions, an immersive suite equipped with projection technology capable of VR training, and the SimKIDS Invention lab housed with 3D printers and a student lounge.
A heartfelt thanks to Leah Shoemaker, Kevin Hua, Kelly McMillen, and the entire SimKIDS Learning Institute Team for coordinating and facilitating these workshops and encouraging our students to pursue their passion and interests!
