Collage of images from the theatre.

This Wednesday, April 29, staff and students from St. Joseph’s College School spent the evening at the theatre attending Mirvish’s hit musical & Juliet. Students and staff traded the classroom for the stage to experience this high-energy “remix” of the world’s most famous tragedy.

It was hard to keep students (and teachers) in their seats. Hearing the music of Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, and Katy Perry woven into a 16th-century setting created a surreal and brilliant experience.

Beyond the entertainment, outings like this help bridge the gap between academic study and cultural literacy. While the primary goal was enjoyment, the trip served a much deeper purpose in strengthening the school community—especially for English Language Learners.

By the time the final curtain fell, the distinctions between “teacher” and “student” or “native speaker” and “language learner” had faded. The audience was united through music, storytelling, and shared experience. It turns out that a little bit of Britney Spears might be one of the most effective “bridges” we’ve found all year.

The experience didn’t end when the curtain came down. A highlight for many students was the opportunity to meet members of the cast after the performance. At the stage door, the larger-than-life characters became real people, giving students a rare glimpse behind the velvet curtain.

This trip was more than a night out at the theatre; it was a meaningful, multi-layered lesson in language, literature, and human connection. Whether through song lyrics, shared laughter with teachers, or a brief hello from a cast member, every student left with greater confidence and a broader perspective.
