St. Oscar Romero Catholic Secondary School's English Language Learners have achieved an exciting accomplishment—earning 2nd place in the Toronto Catholic District School Board's (TCDSB) Newcomer Video Competition!

At the beginning of the project, many students felt hesitant about being recorded and speaking in English. The idea seemed both challenging and intimidating. However, as the group began planning, rehearsing, and filming together, their confidence grew. They reflected on their experiences as newcomers, shared their stories, and practiced their lines—encouraging one another and learning to express themselves more freely and clearly in English.

Throughout this journey, the students developed their language skills and confidence: With each practice, their voices grew stronger, their pronunciation improved, and their willingness to take risks in English increased. They have also built a sense of belonging and community, supporting one another through mistakes and celebrating each other’s progress.

Congratulations to our ELL students for this well-deserved recognition!
