People working on something mechanical

The Romero Robotics Team #6397 competed at Humber College on March 12–14 and at Georgian College March 27–29 in Barrie in Regional Competitions with First Robotics Canada.

For the first time ever, the Romero Robotics Team developed two separate robots for competition, each with different drives: One with a “tank” drive to compete at Humber College; the other with “swerve” drive for competition at Georgian College. It was wonderful for two different teams of students to develop separate robots and try them both in different competitions as a way of gauging best efficiency and performance.

In both competitions, Romero did exceedingly well! At Humber College, we ended strong to become a team captain, selecting other teams to join us to go to Championship Playoff Rounds. At Georgian College, the team was moving between 2nd place and 5th place over the course of the competition, landing in the Championship playoff rounds and finishing with a strong performance!

Our Romero Robotics team offers students is a fantastic opportunity to apply their (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) STEM learning in a real-world experience. Our students use these skills as they move into Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, and Bio Medical Engineering programs at the university level!

We have now qualified for Provincials! Out of 120 teams from all school boards and private organizations across Ontario, we are now ranked 46 overall! Additionally, Romero is also currently ranked the top team in the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB)! We are very proud of our students and teacher mentors!

We are looking forward to next year’s competition and have already started planning and development for the next school year!
