This semester, Ms. Pinto’s Grade 10 Academic Enriched English class and Ms. Ciarrocchi’s Grade 11/12 Visual Arts class explored the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ People as part of their Independent Study Unit (ISU). Their learning culminated in the creation of a reflective learning space grounded in three guiding principles: Education, Reflection, and Action.
The installation, titled The Room of Reflection: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ People, invited visitors to engage deeply with the topic. Each guest was asked to first educate themselves by learning at least one new piece of information, then reflect on what they had learned, and finally consider meaningful actions they could take in response.
In recognition of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ People, the room was opened to the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School community. Ms. Williams’ music students contributed to the experience with a moving performance of The Red Dress Song by Amanda Rheaume and Chantal Kreviazuk, adding a powerful emotional dimension to the event.
The school community extends gratitude to Director Brendan Browne, Superintendent of Area 7 Joe Bria, Indigenous Advisor Andre Obomsawin, Superintendent of Indigenous Education, Equity, and Community Relations Roy Fernandez, and all staff who supported the students in their learning and in bringing this important initiative to life.
