SHSM Students Gain Real-World Experience with Ornge and Flashpoint Training

On Thursday, March 26, Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from Madonna Catholic Secondary School joined forces with Transportation SHSM students from James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic Secondary School for an incredible Sector Partnered Experience (SPE) at Ornge.

Students traded the classroom for the hangar, gaining an exclusive look into the high-stakes world of emergency medical aviation. It was a true front-row seat to the industry, as students toured the facilities and met dedicated helicopter mechanics, aviation engineers, paramedics, and pilots who keep this critical service running across Ontario.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted from observation to action. Facilitated by Flashpoint Training, students participated in a “Shark Tank”-style challenge that required them to blend clinical knowledge with logistical problem-solving. Working in teams, they developed creative solutions and presented their ideas to the group for feedback and reflection.

It was an inspiring day of teamwork and discovery. A sincere thank you to the Ornge and Flashpoint Training teams for mentoring our students and showing them that, whether in healthcare or aviation, the sky is truly the limit for their future careers.
