Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue university-level courses while attending secondary school.

The courses are more rigorous than others and allow students to dig deeper into subjects that interest them and learn to tap their creativity and problem-solving skills to address challenges.

AP Program at Our School

Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre offers AP Preparation and AP courses that include the mandated Ontario curriculum expectations for each course as well as enrichment opportunities.

Participation in these courses involves intense analytical discussion and thought. Students are encouraged and expected to think critically, rationally, and analytically to work through course content.

The learning experiences in AP courses foster skills which will be essential for success at the University Level.

Benefits of AP Courses

Some of the benefits of AP courses include:

  • AP students learn essential time management and study skills needed for college and career success.

  • 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions.

  • Research shows that students who receive a score of 3 or higher on AP Exams typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher graduation rates than their non-AP peers.

  • Qualifying AP Exam scores earn university credit in nearly all universities in the United States and Canada and are recognized in 60 other countries worldwide. Scores of 3 or 4 on AP Exams fulfill admission requirements in many universities in UK and Europe.

We also offer students the opportunity to write AP exams for courses that are not offered at Father John Redmond. In this case, the student would prepare independently for the exam and the school would only be responsible for ordering and proctoring the exam.
