Respect for Life Week

The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) celebrates Respect for Life Week from May 7 to 13, 2023.

The policies and practices of the TCDSB affirm the sacred character of human life, and Respect for Life week is an annual opportunity to celebrate this.

We are called to be creative and supportive of life. Respect for life means that all human beings have value and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, from the eldest to the youngest, from those who are strong and healthy to those who are vulnerable because of illness or disabilities, and from those who can speak for themselves to those who cannot.

As a Catholic community, every week is Respect for Life Week, as we work together to nurture and empower our students and one another to stand up for those who are most vulnerable.

All life is sacred, and we are called to serve and to love one another.

Tips for Respect for Life Week

  • Discuss what it means to have respect for all life and explore moral and social justice (e.g., through some of the news and stories appearing online).

  • Some conversations on respect for life issues can be sensitive so it is important to review the pathways to care that are available before and after any discussion.

  • Connect virtually with those who may feel isolated during this time (e.g., elderly loved ones online, call extended family or friends who live alone).

  • Pray with family and friends for those who are vulnerable. Families may consider accessing  Catholic Family Services of Toronto for support.

  • Consider donating to programs that are supporting individuals and groups (e.g. Angel Foundation for LearningShareLife and Development & Peace).

  • Respect for Life Week will be celebrated in person in Ottawa and online from May 7 to 13 in 2023.

  • 2022 was the 25th Anniversary of the National March for Life in Ottawa. The theme for 2022 was "I am fearfully and wonderfully made" quoted from Psalm 139:14, expressing our Catholic belief that everyone is lovingly made in the image and likeness of God.

  • In 2021, the international Pro-Life movement developed and approved a pro-life flag. The symbolism of the flag and purchasing information can found on the Pro-Life Flag website.

  • As part of Respect for Life Week, the Nurturing our Catholic Community team has organized guest speakers for virtual broadcasts on various topics.
