On April 28, 2025 (Monday), a group of dedicated students from St. John Paul II Secondary School attended the Honouring Indigenous Justice Symposium at the Catholic Education Centre (CEC). With many of the attendees planning to enter law school next year, the event offered a timely and powerful learning opportunity. Throughout the day, students engaged with thought-provoking questions and reflected deeply on what true justice means for all communities, especially Indigenous peoples.

The day started with an Eagle Feather Prayer and an informative talk by an Elder who walked students through a series of problem-solving scenarios. One of the keynote speakers, the Honourable Michelle O’Bonsawin, shared her insights and experiences as a leader in Canadian law and Indigenous justice. Her words inspired students to consider not just the legal system’s structures, but also how they can evolve to better serve equity, inclusion, and reconciliation.

The symposium sparked important conversations about systemic change, Indigenous rights, and the role future lawyers will play in creating a more just society. Students left the event with a renewed sense of purpose, gratitude for the knowledge shared, and excitement for the journey ahead. The day served as a reminder that the pursuit of justice requires not only intellect but compassion, courage, and a commitment to listening and learning from Indigenous voices.
