On Wednesday, February 25, students enrolled in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program from Brebeuf College, Chaminade College, Loretto College, and Monsignor Percy Johnson completed an enriching Sector-Partnered Experience at Humber River Hospital, organized by Fair Chance Learning.
The day began with an inspiring keynote address from Joe Gorman, Director of Corporate and Public Affairs, who shared his career journey and encouraged students to explore the many pathways within the health-care sector.
Students gained insight into cutting-edge medical technologies and the compassionate care strategies utilized by the team at Humber River Hospital. They toured the biotechnology laboratory, learning how specialized equipment is maintained and hearing directly from technicians about their roles and career paths. Students also visited the hospital’s state-of-the-art Command Centre, highlighting why Humber River Hospital is recognized as North America’s most digital hospital.
A highlight of the day was an orthopaedic demonstration by Micheline Tel, where students observed how fractures are treated in the clinic and learned about the work that orthopaedic technicians do in creating casts for conditions such as scoliosis and clubfoot.
Students also learned from Christine Fisher about the many volunteer opportunities within the hospital and the significant impact volunteers have on the health-care system.
To conclude the experience, students collaborated on a challenge focused on fundraising and health-care innovation, putting their learning into action. It was an engaging, informative, and memorable experience for all, and students thoroughly enjoyed exploring the many pathways within the health-care industry.
A special thank you to Dustin Jez, Martha Jez, and Bushra Ul-Haq for their continued partnership and for organizing this meaningful day.
