On June 4, 2026, Senator O’Connor Catholic Secondary School proudly hosted the second annual Senator O’Connor Math Contest for middle school students. Participants from ten Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) middle schools gathered after school for an afternoon of challenging problem solving, critical thinking, and friendly competition.
The contest was created by Ania Nedeljkovic, a former Senator O’Connor student and current undergraduate student at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Originally launched as her Grade 12 legacy project, the contest was designed to inspire younger students to develop their mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills in a supportive and engaging environment. With sponsorship and approval from the Canadian Mathematical Society, prizes were awarded to recognize student achievement.
To help participants prepare, Ania developed six enrichment worksheets and accompanying video lessons covering key contest topics. These resources were created with the support of Grade 11 students Alexandra Chin and Andrej Nedeljkovic, who have helped organize and run the contest for both years. The materials are intended to provide additional opportunities for mathematical enrichment, and it is hoped that teachers will incorporate them into their classroom instruction to further support students’ problem solving skills and mathematical development. Teachers and students can access the materials by joining the Senator O’Connor Math Contest Google Classroom: 6i76psi.
Congratulations to this year’s top three finishers:
- David R. (St. Lawrence Catholic School)
- William H. (St. Catherine Catholic School)
- Mara A. (St. Richard Catholic School)
We were impressed by the enthusiasm, perseverance, and dedication demonstrated by all participants. Congratulations to everyone who took part in making this year’s contest a success. We look forward to welcoming even more students next year.
