Bishop Allen Academy proudly celebrated La Journée internationale de la Francophonie with a dynamic, fully French-language concert showcasing the richness, history, and global diversity of the Francophone world. This year’s presentation, Chansons de la Francophonie – Un voyage musical à travers les siècles, brought students together with distinguished Toronto-based artists for an immersive cultural and educational experience.
The one-hour performance featured acclaimed musicians Tamar Ilana (voice, percussion), Dr. Judith Cohen (voice, medieval vielle, recorders, percussion), Matt Salik (guitar), and Dani Magliano (percussion). Together, the ensemble guided students on a musical journey linking medieval France, Québec, Acadia, and contemporary Louisiana.
Through traditional songs, call‑and‑response pieces, and an original composition, students explored how the French language travels, evolves, and continues to unite communities across continents. The program also included the teaching of a traditional dance, encouraging active participation and cultural engagement.
Throughout the concert, the artists provided historical and cultural context, introduced regional vocabulary and expressions, and invited students to join in simple refrains. The emphasis on active listening, linguistic discovery, and collective music-making created an accessible and memorable learning experience for all.
Selected repertoire included:
Germaine, belle Germaine (Québec)
Trésor (original composition)
Gentilz Gallans (medieval France)
Dans mon chemin (Québec)
De la la rivière (France)
La Bastringue (French Canada)
Meurette (Acadia)
Dessous le pont de Nantes (France)
Belle qui tient ma vie (Renaissance)
Allons danser Colinda (Louisiana)
This celebration highlights Bishop Allen Academy’s continued commitment to fostering French language learning and cultural appreciation. The concert offered students a meaningful opportunity to experience French as a living, dynamic, and shared global language.
